Arguably best known for his stint fronting that unforgettable combo The Bushburys (who produced some of the most consistently satisfying rootsy music of the turn-of-the-90s), Eddy's been busy producing some exceedingly fine music out on his own. Only last year, his first solo album The Singing Tree was released, to deservedly wide acclaim, and now that set is swiftly followed by his second, Stourbridge Town. And what an attractive set it is too, albeit more than a touch laid-back in comparison perhaps - and I think I just about prefer it to The Singing Tree because here Eddy feels as though he's just making music naturally with no need to prove himself as a solo artist. But it also certainly builds on The Singing Tree in terms of gently crafted expertise, and it feels more relaxed and content while retaining memorability throughout, for each one of the individual songs is a gently intimate jewel that transports the sensibility of prime folky Americana to his native West Midlands with a touch of Celtic thrown in (would it be stretching things too much to envisage a new genre, Brumicana?!). Stripped-back yet engaging, Eddy's creations purvey an entirely unassuming kind of grandeur. There's a simple poetic romanticism within Eddy's lyrics, whereby the imagery has a poignancy beyond the immediate impact of the words themselves - that's a difficult concept to explain, so you just have to let Eddy's music in and absorb its delights first-hand. King Of My Own Country is a cross between the country-blues of Chris Smither and the folk-troubadour, Queen Of Stourbridge Town takes a local legend as its starting point (even working in a reference to Katie Fitzgerald's, the music venue that Eddy and his partner Trina run). The closing Tu Es A Des Années Lumière is the odd-one-out, a chanson sung partly in French to a swaying Cuban-type beat which doesn't quite sit easily with the rest of the album. And I do find that the album's very brevity, and its wispy lightness of touch and texture, occasionally combine to form a slight impression of ephemerality. But that shouldn't pose a problem, 'cos once the disc's in the player all you need to do is hit repeat!

Last years excellent third solo album, Stourbridge Town had echoes of Roy Harper and Nick Drake, a pronounced Celtic Feel and songs with both a finely judged melodyand lyrical edge. Eddy Morton should be no stranger to those of you who appreciate fine writing within the Folk/Country and Celtic tradition, with his solo and band back catalogue containing many high points, Stourbridge Town sees Morton continuing in a similar vein, working in accordance with the old adage that if it aint broke dont fix it. The album is a quietly assuredcollection ,bristling with a selection of appealing compostions. There's the delicate beauty of the country-tinged ' Man Who's Got No Name', the absorbing autobiographical ' Queen of Stourbridge Town', the blues flavoured simplicity of 'King of My Own Country', and the infectious 'Other Side Of Town'. Occasionally he steers a little too close to laid back for his own good, although thats a minor quibble with an album thatcontinues to indicate just why he's built such areputation for quality songwriting.

| About Eddy Morton |
Eddy Morton is a Stourbridge based singer songwriter . Former frontman
with The Bushburys he now runs Katie Fitzgeralds (with his partner Trina Keane) and New Mountain Music.
Inspired to write by his interest in the early 20th century poetry of Spender ,
Auden , Macneice and Larkin it was only later that he was drawn towards
music by the likes of Donovan, Led Zeppelin and in particular Roy Harper,
Eddy Mortons business is words and the images they create . Often hard to
pigeonhole his songs are like chapters in a whole story yet to unfold .
As a solo performer, Eddy Morton has worked all over the UK, Ireland and the USA supporting many top acts including Ruby Turner, The Saw Doctors, Manfred Mann, Ralph Mctell and Lindisfarne. In 1992 he joined Factory Records band, the Adventure Babies working with Steve Lillywhite of U2 fame.
In 1994 he was a founder member of The New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils and throughout eleven years, 8 albums and many line up and name changes has appeared at every major Folk/Roots Festival in the UK and Europe. These include Cambridge, Cropredy, Skagen, Guildford, Dranouter, The Badentreffen (Nuremburg) and many more.
During this time the band continually toured the UK and Europe with their last two albums "Trying to Catch the Sun" and "Timeless" released throughout Europe. "The Vision" taken from Trying to Catch the Sun appeared on the Warner Brothers compilation "Highlands and Islands 2" alongside artists such as The chieftains, Luka Bloom, and Van Morrison.
